The Path to the Presidency:
 
1. A Presidential Candidate must...
  • Be a natural-born citizen of the United States
  • Have been a resident of the United States for 14 years or more
  • Be at least 35 years old
2. Primaries and Caucuses:
First round elections or meeting s held in each state to give direction in choosing a party candidate
 
3. Presidential National Conventions:
Large events where delegates gather to formally select their party's candidate for the general election.
 
4. The General Election:
The main election at which any U.S. citizen who is at least 18 years old, and meets the requirements of his or her state, may vote.
 
5. The Electoral College:
The group of people representing each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. It is their vote, guided by the general election results in their state, that elects the president.
 
6. The Inauguration:
The ceremony at which the newly elected President takes the oath of office and officially begins serving a term.
